| Question Number 1: I am submitting this request under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 to obtain information about your trust鈥檚 current policies on blood transfusion authorisation. Please provide the following: A copy of your trust鈥檚 blood transfusion policy or standard operating procedure document(s) that outline who is authorised to prescribe and authorise blood products, specifically including Advanced Clinical Practitioners (ACPs) or equivalent non-medical roles. If possible, please provide electronic copies of relevant policies or documents. | |
| Answer To Question 1: To answer your query, we have attached the Trust's Blood Transfusion Policy, which outlines the requirements for requesting and prescribing blood components. Please note that within the Trust, only medical staff are authorised to prescribe units of blood. Advanced Clinical Practitioners (ACPs) and other non-medical practitioners are not included within the scope of this policy as authorised prescribers of blood components. | Answer To Question 2: No. ACPs are not permitted to authorise blood transfusions either independently or under supervision, as only medical staff are authorised to prescribe blood components in accordance with the Trust's Blood Transfusion Policy. | |
| Question Number 3: Details of governance structures related to transfusion practice, including the identity or role of the trust鈥檚 transfusion lead and whether ACPs have representation on the trust transfusion committee. | |
| Answer To Question 3: The Trust's governance structure relating to transfusion practice is enclosed with this response. ACPs do not currently have representation within the Trust's transfusion governance arrangements and are not included within the Trust's Blood Transfusion Policy in relation to the prescribing or authorisation of blood components. | |
| Question Number 4: Any training, competency, or credentialing requirements specified by the trust for ACPs or other non-medical staff to authorise blood transfusions | |
| Answer To Question 4: As ACPs and other non-medical practitioners are not authorised to prescribe or authorise blood components within the Trust, there are no specific training, competency, or credentialing requirements in place for these staff groups to undertake this activity. Relevant training and competency requirements relating to transfusion practice for authorised staff are detailed within the attached Blood Transfusion Policy and associated governance documentation. | |
