Request Summary: Use of Botox in hernia surgery.

| Question Number 1: A person was advised that it would be necessary to use Botox if and when they are operated on for a hernia. The person concerned is very allergic and advised a patch test would be required. Please advise: What substance is used in injections precisely? Is this approved for this use in the UK? | |
| Answer To Question 1: The main ingredients are: -Botulinum toxin Type A (active ingredient), human albumin solution (stabiliser), saline (salt solution as a buffer and dilutant). Botox is approved for use in the UK but is Off License for abdominal wall surgery, however it is common practice to use it in this setting. | |
| Question Number 2: The person ( a pensioner) was told that they would have to arrange to have an allergy test done privately as the hospital didn't do these. Is it the custom to force people to have allergy tests privately when their health and life could be at risk? Would the hospital reimburse the cost of these? | |
| Answer To Question 2: The Trust cannot comment on individual patient circumstances under the FOI Act 2000. The information requested is not recorded information held by the Trust. The Trust has a duty to advise and assist you in order to support the FOI process.
