The Met Office has issued a Red Heat Alert, indicating that exceptionally high temperatures may pose serious risks to health, particularly for older adults, young children, pregnant women, and people with existing medical conditions.

During periods of extreme heat, it is important to take steps to stay safe and reduce the risk of heat-related illnesses such as heat exhaustion and heatstroke. Here is some guidance for taking care of yourself and others during extreme heat:

• Stay Hydrated - Drink plenty of fluids throughout the day, even if you do not feel thirsty. Avoid excessive alcohol, caffeine and sugary drinks, which can contribute to dehydration.
• Avoid the hottest part of the day - try to stay out of the sun between 11am - 3pm when temperatures are usually at their highest. If you need to go outside, seek shade whenever possible.
• Avoid strenuous physical activity - especially during the hottest part of the day
• Dress for the weather - wear lightweight, loose-fitting clothing. Wear a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses when outdoors.
• Use sun protection - Apply sunscreen with a high SPF and reapply regularly.
• Keep your home cool - Close curtains or blinds on windows exposed to direct sunlight. Turn off lights and electrical equipment that are not in use and consider cooking at cooler times of the day.
• Look out for vulnerable people - check on elderly relatives, neighbours, and friends, paying particular attention to people who live alone or have underlying health conditions.
